Folklore: Valerian is the strongest sedative known to the Herbal world and is widely used to promote deep sleep without the unpleasant side effect of a "hangover" feeling upon waking.

Valerian can also be used to counteract stress, emotional upheaval, nervousness and irritability. Valerian is a powerful nervine, anti-spasmodic and carminative therefore it is also used to reduce blood pressure, cramping and has been used to treat seizures, particularly in cases of epilepsy. Due to its anodyne properties, it is also used as a pain reliever.

Valepotriates are the active sedatives found in Valerian, mostly concentrated in the root of the plant. Other constituents are valerianic, formic acid, acetic acid, boneol, pinene, alkaloids and resin.

Valerian flowers have a very strong, heavy and sweet smell. All parts of the plant may be used but the root is the most treasured.
