Folklore: Lemon Balm is best known as a mild sedative but posseses many other beneficial properties as well. In ancient times, "Melissa" was touted to bring long life and at one time was the only herb a person was believed to require.

Lemon Balm is a relaxant which affects the nervous system, the digestive system, the stomach and the uterus, helping to ease cramping and causing a feeling of overall ease. It has mild anesthetic properties and can be used as a mild pain reliever.
