WHO IS GRANNY GOOD?

When I was a child I spent every summer with my Grandparents at their small cottage-like home, an enchanting place surrounded by thick beautiful gardens brimming with intriguing rare and mysterious herbs. The gardens were all natural and organic. My Granny never considered using anything other than organic gardening methods. She respected and honored the plants as if they were human. I watched as she communed with them, nurturing and encouraging each one to flourish. My Granny was as unique as the plants themselves – an ancient medicine woman whose wisdom was instilled by generations of natural healers before her.
Granny was one of eight children in a family that arrived in America when she was 16 years old. My family had roots deeply embedded in European soil for centuries. When my ancestors arrived in this country, they continued to keep their customary old-world traditions alive. My Granny, like her Granny before her, protected the healing herbal plants as entrusted by their small village. They brought valuable seeds and knowledge along with them on their journey. Granny was taught the secrets of preparing herbal salves, liniments, syrups, lozenges, tonics and teas. Along with medicine-making, Granny delighted in creating and sharing hand-made herbal body creams, oils and perfumes made from the same herbs that grew in the garden.
Granny gently taught me that an herb that can heal a cut or burn by rejuvenating skin cells can also soften skin and reduce the signs of aging. 
My Grandparents basement (which also served as a storm shelter) was always steamy and exotically sweet smelling. Medicines were prepared in the kitchen and beauty products were created in Granny’s basement workshop.
Each morning when Granny woke me, I especially hoped we would be going downstairs. I always got some special treasure to sample at the end of a day in her workshop. I remember feeling like it was the most magical place on Earth.
When Granny’s friends would drop in, they always knew where to find her. They would just follow their nose. Everyone was welcome. She would customarily inquire about the health and well-being of every visitor’s family and no matter what the response was, she always said, “good”. If everyone was healthy, “Good!” If someone was ill, she would say, “Good - I have just the thing for that!” From as far back as I can remember she had been lovingly known as “Granny Good”.
